Mayor Emanuel Says Chicago is the Best Startup City — We Agree

A few months ago Chicago’s Other Mayor, venture capitalist and philanthropist J.B. Pritzker, joined us on FIVEinSIXTY to share a slew of no-nonsense wisdom including the ever-true No Asshole Rule.

Anyone who’s heard of J.B. — which is a lot of people — knows how adamant he is about Chicago’s potential to be the country’s next big tech and startup hub.

To the surprise of many, some headline-making data in early June appeared to validate J.B. — leading private market data company PitchBook found that Chicago startups have the highest return on investment, beating out the likes of New York, Seattle, and San Francisco.

What does this have to do with Rahm Emanuel, you ask?

Well, when Chicago’s Actual Mayor wanted to get in on the FIVEinSIXTY action, we knew exactly what we had to ask him.

“Mayor Emanuel,” we said, “why is Chicago the best city for starting a company?”

Mayor Emanuel shares five reasons every entrepreneur should flock to Chicago:

1. Talent. 36% of people in Chicago have a 4-year college degree. The national average is 27%.

2. Transportation. There is nowhere in the US — or the world — that you can’t directly travel to from Chicago.

3. Technology. Chicago was one of the fastest-growing cities for tech jobs coming out of the recession. Now it boasts the highest startup ROI in the US.

4. Economic Diversity. Chicago has the most diverse economy of the US. No sector contributes more than 13% to employment.

5. Cost. Chicago has literally one third of the cost of living of New York or San Francisco, and is $68,000 cheaper than Los Angeles.
